Manufacture SAUTER & Cie (21st century) - Lot 264
Manufacture SAUTER & Cie (21st century) Watercolor-painted carbon fiber lunar globe on staff Based on data from the map created during NASA’s Lola mission Signed and numbered Wooden base Handcrafted in the tradition of 18th- and 19th-century workshops Diameter: 32 cm Note: Founded in 2016 in Besançon by Alain SAUTER (a professor and researcher in geography and a cartography enthusiast), Sauter & Cie is France’s last remaining globe manufacturer. Renowned for the quality of its creations, the company regularly receives awards for its rare craftsmanship. Six people work in the workshop, which produces about a hundred pieces each year. Each piece requires a five-step artisanal process: shaping (which involves creating a plaster sphere, the base of the globe), cartography (which involves selecting the map to be printed and cut into meridian strips), gluing (a crucial step in assembling the map strips onto the sphere to create the globe), coloring (which enhances the reliefs or details of the maps and applies layers of protective varnish to ensure the object can be handled safely), and mounting (by creating a stand or base crafted by a cabinetmaker from fine woods such as oak or Jura beech). It is thus an entirely artisanal process that allows the manufacturer to carry on more than three centuries of French expertise in the production of globes
