William CARY (1759–1825) Bronze sextant signed “CARY London” with a silver circle and an adjustable stand equipped with a counterweight A rare model with a stand that allows for land-based observations Circa 1820–1830 H. 56 cm - W. 34 cm Note: William Cary (1759–1825), an apprentice to Ramsden, founded his company in 1785 and manufactured instruments for all of Europe, notably for Bonaparte in 1812. Joined by his brother John, the company moved to St. James Street in London. Charles Gould, an apprentice at Cary’s, invented a new type of portable microscope in 1820. Upon Cary’s death in 1825, Gould took over the company, but the “Cary London” name continued to be used for about another decade. The company closed in 1902 upon the death of Henry Porter
