Marc SIMON, interior designer, assisted by his son PIERRE SI - Lot 502
Marc SIMON, interior designer, assisted by his son PIERRE SIMON Set of two “DEAUVILLE” armchairs for the “Versailles” economy-class dining room Armchairs with black-lacquered tubular legs and a metal frame, featuring an enveloping shell that forms solid armrests padded with latex and covered in Havana-colored faux leather Produced by AIRBORNE (label missing) Circa 1960 78 x 59.5 x 57 cm This type of armchair can be seen in the catalog for the 2011 “FRANCE” exhibition at the Musée de la Marine (p. 89) and in Armelle Bouchet’s book “LE PAQUEBOT FRANCE” (pages 125, 126, 127, 171, and 173), which states that “this model combines all the elements of modern comfort characteristic of 1960s seating” Note: The “Versailles” dining room on the France occupied a vast space spanning two levels (main deck and Deck A) across the entire width of the ship. Originally, there were 632 chairs on Deck A and 196 on the main deck. All were upholstered in olive-green or gray-beige fabric. Following criticism of the color of the 632 seats on Deck A, Marc Simon introduced black as an additional color option. Subsequently, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique requested other color options over time.
