MARIE fils (active c. 1740–1760) Four-section case made of vellum and leather, with bronze rings, signed “Marie Fils, Quai de l’Horloge, Paris” and dated 1745 Superb quality of finish and preservation, with openwork decoration L. 106 cm (stuck frame) Note: Marie, the father, was an optician in Paris and a supplier to the Paris Observatory in 1736. He established the “Au Griffon” shop at 39 Quai de l’Horloge in the early 1700s. The business was then taken over by his son, who signed his work “Marie Fils” until his death in 1760. At that time, the company was managed by Marie’s widow and continued to supply the Paris Observatory. In 1788, MARIE telescopes were considered superior to their English counterparts. The business was taken over by Putois, who signed his work “Successor to Widow Marie” at the end of the 18th century. Subsequently, the business was taken over by the Rochette family in 1808. The “Au Griffon” brand endured through the Patouelle family in the early 20th century and remained a hallmark of quality.
