Eglomized glass "boule de pardon" or "boule de mariée" with - Lot 290
Eglomized glass "boule de pardon" or "boule de mariée" with wrought-iron stand Late 19th century Diameter: 40 cm Note: The tradition of “boules de pardon” originates in Brittany, where young men purchase glass balls during the “Messe du Pardon” (local Masses held to honor a saint associated with the local church). The purchase is made either to have a memento of the day and give it to a relative who was unable to attend, or to present it to the young man’s beloved as a declaration of his intention to marry her. In this case, the larger the ball, the greater the debt. The ornaments are displayed and passed down through families for generations. These ornaments generally originate from factories in Lorraine (the Goetzenbruck glassworks) near the Vosges Mountains, the epicenter of Christmas ornament production.
