The Sacred Way - Lot 354
The Sacred Way Bronze group with green patina, signed and dated 1921 21 x 31 x 21 cm The Sacred Way was the only road connecting the Verdun front lines with the rear (Bar-le-Duc). It was through this road that the Battle of Verdun was supplied with troops and ammunition for 10 months, day and night. Maurice Barrès gave it its name. The Sacred Road is the only road in France exempt from having a number (although administratively it is designated as the D1916). A milestone has been erected every kilometer, from Bar-le-Duc to Verdun. The milestones are topped with a soldier’s helmet and adorned with the martyr’s palm.
