This scene depicts the martyrdom of Saint Blandine, an episo - Lot 641
This scene depicts the martyrdom of Saint Blandine, an episode from the history of the early Christians in 172 Painted canvas Second half of the 19th century H. 2 m - L. 3 m In an amphitheater and before Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Saint Blandine is thrown to the wild beasts, notably lions, which did not attack her, and then to a bull, which killed her. This scene is inspired by a copper engraving by Jean Luyken (1649–1712), a highly talented artist and poet known for scenes depicting religious persecution. The second half of the 19th century saw a rise in painted canvases at the expense of wool and silk tapestries, the latter sometimes also referred to as “finti arazzi.” This technique has been known for a long time, and in the 17th century, one notable example in Rome was the famous collection of *finti arazzi* belonging to Cardinal Ottoboni.
