Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo - Lot 183
Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo Large female figure by "Master Mulongo," wood H. 26 cm - W. 9 cm (on a base) Provenance: Merton D. Simpson, New York. Generally, the Luba female figure, ubiquitous in sculpture, places her hands near her breasts, emphasizing her nurturing role and her importance in the culture. Surprisingly, the Master Sculptor of Mulongo presents her asymmetrically. She firmly clutches her right breast with a hand extended forward, thereby emphasizing her nurturing identity in an even more realistic way. This is a nearly unique posture among the Luba. In a gesture very rare among the Luba, the left arm bends with great finesse toward the shoulder. The hand, with its tapered fingers, rests on the edge of the shoulder blade in a gesture of restraint and identity.
