Jules DUBOSCQ (1817-1886) Tilting cast-iron and brass table mirror stamped "JULES DUBOSCQ". Tilting concave mirror for light experiments or as a reflector (to parallel light rays or magnify an object). France, 1850-1880 Diam. 28.5 cm - W. 36 cm - H. (lowered) 62 cm (crack) NOTE: Jules Duboscq was the son of a violin maker, and in 1849 took over the business of Jean-Baptiste Soleil, a manufacturer of scientific and mathematical instruments. At the start of his business, he took the name Duboscq-Soleil. Quickly renowned for its creations, the company became Duboscq or J.Duboscq. He was responsible for a large number of inventions in the field of light research, including stereoscopes, cameras, magic lanterns and electromagnets. In 1883, Duboscq entered into a partnership with François Pellin, who added his name to the Duboscq signature, becoming Duboscq-Pellin. On Duboscq's death in 1886, the company became Pellin.
