A member, then president, of the Académie des Sciences from 1743, the Duc de Chaulnes published several memoirs before inventing a brand-new type of microscope in 1751, which bears his name. This was the most advanced microscope of its time. He later took charge of the king's cabinet of curiosities at the Palais de La Muette.
