Astrolabe in brass and copper Large model with six spandrels fitting into the main body The spider is engraved with the names of constellations and stars It is attached to an alidade ruler (18 graduations) with a horse-shaped rod The limb of the matrix is graduated with 44 graduations related to the 12 signs of the zodiac (divided into 4 sectors). Above is a sura glorifying God in a floral setting The reverse of the matrix features tables and a shadow square for topographical use of the instrument. This type of astronomical astrolabe was used for religious purposes, to indicate the auspicious times for Muslim prayer services and celebrations. It also indicated the Qibla, a sacred place for Muslims. The originality of this model lies in its decoration, its graduations and its large size.
