Navigation fox from the slave ship l'ARMIDE in mahogany with its hens (rods connected by strings) The navigation fox is an instrument used to note the ship's course and speed. France - circa 1850-1860 55.5 x 32 cm Note: The Armide was an active frigate from around 1821 to 1888. Armed with 28 cannons, she sailed to Brazil, then to Bourbon Island, before becoming a hospital ship in 1828. Back in the West Indies, she was converted into a transport ship in 1852, and became a prisoner transport between Brest and the Cayenne penal colony. In 1864, the ship was set aside to become a training ship under the name of Entrepôt, and was finally destroyed in 1888.
