CAMEROON - Lot 54
CAMEROON KAKA paternity figure Wood and crusty patina - Height 49 cm - Length 14 cm (plinth) Paternity figures are exceptionally rare in African art. Among the Kaka, who live in western Cameroon in the Mbem region, south of the Mambila, the creation of these works is linked to ancestor veneration. Harter (1994: 47). "Ancestor veneration seems to have a primordial place for them. It is supervised by the wantop, one of the members of the chief's council, as part of the liturgies of the mbir male secret society. The crusty patina on the actual figure indicates a long period of ritual use.
