MALI - Lot 47
MALI KONO BAMANA mask Wood - Height 103 cm (plinth) Provenance: Former Pierre Dartevelles collection, Brussels Designating both a religious power and the worship paid to it within its initiation society, "the Kono is a 'swallowing beast'; and the Bamana know that it is perfectly futile to try and clearly define a power whose strength is to take on multiple forms, to constantly disfigure and refigure itself" (Colleyn, Bamana, 2009, p. 68). Here, the tension of the lines results in a perfect combination of hyena and elephant features, reflecting the polymorphism of the powerful divinities that the priests must favorably influence.
