Bamiléké Kom helmet mask, Cameroon, wood, pigment, patina of - Lot 323
Bamiléké Kom helmet mask, Cameroon, wood, pigment, patina of use H.32cmxW.21cm Common to the Bangwa / Bamileke kingdoms of the Fontem basin, helm masks are based on traditional canons, masterfully highlighted here: large, protruding cheeks symbolizing abundance, wealth and fecundity, a staircase-shaped headdress, arched ears protruding forward, tubular eyes emerging from hollow sockets and a wide-open mouth with visible teeth. These masks, designed without eyeholes, were worn brandished at arm's length above the head, with the dancer looking through the costume.
