Kuyu tricephal figure, Republic of Congo, wood, pigment, kao - Lot 211
Kuyu tricephal figure, Republic of Congo, wood, pigment, kaolin H.54cmxW.13cm (plinth) Unlike the heads/puppets still used in Kyebe Kyebe dances and classically illustrating Kuyu art, standing statues are rare. Different from marottes with conical bases (cf. Dapper, 2000: 81), they are interpreted as statues of ancestors. Idealized "portraits", they reflect the fundamental importance, in the traditional Kuyu value system, of bodily signs arranged by human hands (paintings, scarification marks, ornaments, filed teeth and head ornaments).
