Grebo mask, Liberia, wood, kaolin - Lot 203
Grebo mask, Liberia, wood, kaolin H.60cmxW.20cm This Grebo mask can be compared with a limited corpus whose characteristics are as follows: an oval face, two tubular eyes, a large, flat, prominent forehead with a vertical median scarification that extends into a fine, triangular nose and a square-cut mouth. This type of mask was very popular with collectors at the beginning of the 20th century, due to the modernity of its "cubist" style. Picasso and Kahnweiler in particular owned several, reproduced in Le Primitivisme dans l'art du 20e siècle, (op.cit, Paris, 1987).
