Figure Idoma, Benue River, Nigeria, wood, kaolin - Lot 174
Figure Idoma, Benue River, Nigeria, wood, kaolin H.60cmxW.23cm (plinth) Their archetypes are divided into two major styles, each reflecting the complex history of the southern Idoma. The first is attributed by François Neyt to an Idoma-Egede workshop, characterized by a hairstyle of stretched buns, the second to the Akewa group, who initiated the custom of painting faces white in the region. Passed down from generation to generation, this rare lineage statue is one of the most archaic examples of the great Idoma statuary.
