Mumuyé figure, Nigeria, wood - Lot 119
Mumuyé figure, Nigeria, wood H.96cmxW.17cm (plinth) In the late 1960s, the anarchy caused by the Ibo war of secession in southern Nigeria combined with the abandonment of religious practices, and Mumuye statuary, discovered by Philippe Guimiot, reached Europe in large numbers. Although the first publication devoted to them dates back to 1970 (Fry, 1970, vol. x, fasc.1), their function remains much less well known than that of masks. According to Strybol (in RMN, 1997: 239), without being able to associate a particular form or style with a specific use, these statues may have a divinatory, therapeutic or prestige-enhancing function.
