Bembe figure, Democratic Republic of Congo, wood - Lot 100
Bembe figure, Democratic Republic of Congo, wood H.14cmxW.6cm (plinth) In 1989, Raoul Lehuard identified a group of around ten works within the Bembe corpus, to which this miniature belongs. All depict a man with a long, pointed beard, adorned with ear ornaments and adopting the same attitude: seated on his knees, legs folded in front of him, left hand resting on his knee, right hand holding a fly swatter, the tip of which rests on the side of his head. His gestures and attributes identify him as a rare chief effigy. In addition to the pose most often reserved for him, the nsesa fly-catcher insignia plays an important role in Kongo rituals, as an instrument of protection and blessing.
