Tsogho Sango reliquary figure, Gabon, wood, copper - Lot 75
Tsogho Sango reliquary figure, Gabon, wood, copper H.23cmxW.8cm (plinth) Reliquary figures are among Gabon's most emblematic objects. Like the Kota or Lumbo, the Tsogho and Sango populations of Central Gabon, followers of Bwiti, a male initiation society, have perpetuated this reliquary tradition by producing examples with characteristic shapes. The heart-shaped face, ending in a triangular chin, illustrates the Tsogho/Sango sculptors' desire to synthesize forms. This particular aesthetic respects a standard canon present on most Tsogho/Sango objects, right down to the decorations on the posts of the ebanza, the house of worship. A symbolic evocation of the ancestor it honors, this effigy combines its primordial ritual function with a strong visual impact, using the distinctive codes of Tsogho art, combined with borrowings from the reliquary figures of neighboring cultures.
