MURGER (H.). French writer (1822-1861). Autograph letter sig - Lot 132
MURGER (H.). French writer (1822-1861). Autograph letter signed one and a half pages in- 4 dated January 24, 1849, addressed to VICTOR HUGO. Address on back to "Monsieur Victor Hugo Représentant du peuple, Membre de l'Académie". Trace of wax seal. H. Murger, in great moral and material distress, implores Victor Hugo to help him find a job by recommending him to the representatives of the chamber he is in contact with: "You have in several circumstances shown me so much interest, and your kindness to young people is so proverbially known...I know no one, and no one knows me, and it takes an army of protectors to get these sorts of places...For ten years...I have known misery, as a commissionaire knows the map of Paris...misery has been a good master to me.... ...I apologize, sir, if my request seems intrusive. But it's a desperate attempt. I've spent all my savings on courage. I am convinced in advance sir, that if you cannot favor me on this occasion it is because the thing will be impossible for you. "
