John or Peter DOLLOND - Lot 97
John or Peter DOLLOND Small telescopic brass bezel in green shagreen Signed DOLLOND LONDON on the first print Circa 1760-1800 Closed length: 10.5 cm Note : Peter DOLLOND (1731-1821) founded his company manufacturing scientific instruments in 1750, after training with Ramsden (a leading optician of the time). Quickly joined by his father John in 1753, the company took the name Dollond or J.Dollond or sometimes J.Dollond & Son and became one of England's leading manufacturers of scientific and precision instruments, supplying the British Court and Navy. On John's death in 1861, Peter took sole control of the company, which reverted to Dollond. The company continued until the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the company still exists under the name Dollond & Aitchison. The Dollond signature is a sign of quality, particularly in the field of optical instruments, where it is responsible for the manufacture of achromatic lenses.
