Covered walnut bowl carved and titled Ile du Diable, coconut - Lot 88
Covered walnut bowl carved and titled Ile du Diable, coconut and brass pedestal
Convict work
On the reverse, an engraving depicts a view of Île Royale with its lighthouse and semaphore. This is certainly a view from Ile du Diable.
Circa 1890-1900
H. 19.5 cm (slight distortion)
Note: Île du Diable is one of the three Îles du Salut that make up the Cayenne penal colony. Active from 1859 to 1946, the bagne was reputed to be one of the toughest on the continent. Each island had its own function, and Devil's Island was for spies and political prisoners. It housed Papillon in Henri Carrière's novel, but above all Alfred DREYFUS.
