Mathieu LE NAIN (Laon 1607- Paris 1677) - Lot 115
Mathieu LE NAIN (Laon 1607- Paris 1677) Virgin and Child Canvas 73 x 60 cm (restorations) No frame An unpublished work by the most "Gentileschian" of the three brothers, our painting can be dated to the years 1650-1655. The broad drapery and ochre coloring are typical of Mathieu. The posture and treatment of the Virgin's face are similar to that of the Virgin from L'Annonciation in the Musée Rolin in Autun (see Le Mystère Le Nain exhibition catalog, Paris, Lens, 2017, no. 50, reproduced). Infrared reflectography reveals that the work was painted over another painting, with a portrait of a man appearing beneath the composition. The recycling of canvases in the Le Nain brothers' studio is well documented, and mainly concerns portraits. Examples include the Triple Portrait of Louis and Mathieu Le Nain, in the National Gallery, which is painted over a woman's portrait (see opus cit. supra, no. 4, reproduced), Mathieu Le Nain's The Denial of Saint Peter in the Musée du Louvre (see opus cit. supra, no. 48, reproduced fig. 1), also painted on a woman's portrait, or Le Joueur de flageolet in the Victoria and Albert Museum (see opus quoted above, no. 38, reproduced fig. 3), painted on a man's portrait.
