Attributed to Jean - Baptiste LE TELLIER fils (1759 - after 1816) Portrait of Viscount Joseph Alexandre de Ségur Wearing the Order of Saint Louis, a Letter in His Hand Gouache on oval view paper 8 x 10 cm Bears an old label on the back Vte de Ségur / son of the marshal / without ceremony / painted by hallé Provenance : Collection of the comte d'Archiac (according to a label on the back) An emblematic figure of the Ancien Régime, Viscount Joseph Alexandre de Ségur (1756 - 1805) was the son of Marshal Philippe Henri de Ségur. In reality, he was the adulterous child of Baron de Besenval, a famous courtier who was close to Marie-Antoinette's circle and author of her famous memoirs. Viscount de Ségur was colonel of the Régiment de Noailles. During the Estates General, he was a deputy for the nobility, but soon withdrew from political life. Above all, he loved literature, writing poems, songs and comedies. A monarchist, during the Revolution he published numerous pamphlets against revolutionary figures in a satirical journal, the Acts of the Apostles. He was imprisoned under the Terror, along with André Chénier, and narrowly escaped the guillotine. After the Revolution, he took part in the singing dinners of the Société du Vaudeville. The son of a miniaturist and a pupil of Hallé, Le Tellier is said to have been a painter for Louis XVI's Menus plaisirs, if an inscription on the back of one of his works is to be believed.
