Ntomo Bamana mask Mali, Wood H.39 cm - L.14 cm The variety of forms making up the Ntomo mask corpus - a society responsible for the initiation of children - bears witness to the inventiveness of Bamana artists. However, the freedom of their interpretation was limited by two fundamental criteria: the association of an anthropomorphic face with a row of two to eight horns, the number of which indicated the type of mask, and the discretion of the mouth.
