Luba ceremonial cane Democratic Republic of the Congo, wood, aluminum, pearl H.63 cm - L.10 cm (plinth) Provenance (according to family oral tradition): former colonial collection, Belgium Kibango ceremonial canes were the major insignia of authority for Luba dignitaries. Belonging to diviners, nobles and territorial chiefs, they acted as receptacles for the stories, genealogies and migrations of a specific family, lineage or chiefdom. As the Luba consider women to be the most capable of preserving the secrets of power, they are the main iconographic theme.
