Important Bamana mask - Lot 307
Important Bamana mask Ségou region, Mali, wood, cowries H.67 cm - L.21 cm (base) Provenance (according to family oral tradition): Pierre Langlois, Paris. Ntomo mask, surmounted by a full-length female figure The powerful face features an overhanging forehead, forming a rectilinear visor above the convex face with round, pierced eyes. The nasal bridge rises from the forehead, extending its curve to form a narrow, busted nose with dilated nostrils, extended by a small, open mouth. Ntomo is the second of the initiation societies through which all Bamana men pass in succession, from their earliest years under the patronage of Faro, god of water, the third divinity to appear in the Bamana creation myth. Combining the opposing forces of culture and nature, she is described as an androgynous divinity, "at the center", the "pivot", the "head" of all things.
