Gabon - Lot 207
Gabon Vuvi mask Wood, kaolin, raffia H.38 cm - L.22 cm (Sold without base) Provenance (according to family oral tradition): Former colonial collection of a serving administrator, passed down through descendants. This type of mask was found in Gabon's central region, the Monts Du Chaillu, at the heart of a vast triangle between M'bigou, Mimongo and Koulamoutou, where the Vuvi, Sango and Tsogho cohabited. Depending on whether they were used during the day or at night, their symbolic function could change completely, from popular rejoicing to initiatory fear (Perrois, 1979, p.266). Vuvi masks have flat or slightly convex faces and a strong tendency towards simplified stylization. The colors are always identical: white face and details highlighted in black and red ochre. A costume of woven straw completely covered the wearer, concealing his or her identity. The costume swayed with the dancer's acrobatic movements.
