Mali - Lot 186
Mali Dogon zoomorphic mask Wood H.35 cm - L.15 cm (Sold without base) Provenance (according to family oral tradition) : Acquired from Pierre Langlois, Paris. This "hunter's mask", dannana or ibi bobongo, belongs to the most restricted group of Dogon masks: those with anthropomorphic representations. Like the seventy-eight types of mask identified by Marcel Griaule in Dogon country between 1931 and 1935 (Masques dogons, 1938) - most of them animal masks - it was created to combat the anger of the nyama of animals killed by hunters. Within his corpus, this work stands out for the monumentality and boldness of its construction.
