Democratic Republic of Congo Mangbetu harp Wood, leather H.86 cm (Sold without bases) The harp, a favorite instrument at the courts of the Mangebetu chiefs, was probably introduced from the south. Those with carved heads, similar to the present example, were carved between 1900 and 1914, see Schildkrout, E. and Keim, C.A., African Reflections. Art from Northeastern Zaire, Seattle, 1984, p. 198 and a harp collected by Lang in Niangara in 1910, p. 18, no. 1.5.
