Democratic Republic of Congo Songye statuette Wood H.19 cm - L.8 cm According to Neyt's classification (F., La redoutable statuaire Songyé d'Afrique Centrale, Brussels, 2004), this work belongs to the "first Western tradition", one of the oldest Songye sculptural traditions. It stands out, however, for its crouching position, an attitude more often seen in Luluwa statuary, and for the extraordinary stylization of its limbs.
