Enameled copper box in the shape of a pug's head, finely painted. The hinged lid is decorated with a gallant scene and inside a woman holding a parasol. Probably from the Bilston factory, England, circa 1770. Accents and restorations. Dim. 4.70 x 4.50 x 4.90 cm Fashionable from 1740 onwards, Carlins are lapdogs with manipulated ears (cut with a manipulator) to meet canine fashion standards. Very popular, they symbolize the Mops, "Carlin" in German, a Masonic order whose motto is fidelity and whose password is a bark.
