Robert LEFEVRE(Bayeux 1755 - Paris 1830) - Lot 33
Robert LEFEVRE(Bayeux 1755 - Paris 1830) Portrait of Marshal Oudinot, Duke of Reggio Canvas titled on the back 73.5 x 51.5 cm Provenance: Always remained in the model's family. Our painting is a sketch for the large portrait commissioned by Napoleon I and kept at the Château de Versailles. Another sketch was recently acquired by the Musée de Fontainebleau. Nicolas Charles Marie Oudinot (1767 - 1847) was a prominent French general of the Revolution and the First Empire. Renowned for his talent as a tactician, he was famous for his disregard for danger, which led to him being wounded on numerous occasions, making him the bravest marshal of the First Empire. His career spanned the revolutionary years through to the July Monarchy. Napoleon, who admired his courage, described him as "the Bayard of the French army". In 1810, after the abdication of Louis Bonaparte, Napoleon entrusted Oudinot with the government of the Kingdom of Holland, a task he accomplished with diplomacy.
