GAVOT Jean-Baptiste (1768-1839) Small portable walnut and elm "serinette" or "perroquette" organ with ten pipes for playing dozens of tunes. A plate indicates the tunes on two cylinders (the second is missing). The sides of the box are painted on a black background, with a scene of an organ player on the front and a rose on the back. The sides feature the Moon and Sun. Above is a parrot in a medallion, surrounded by musical instruments. The corners of the box are decorated with climbing roses. Iron crank and limewood cylinder Ten-notch iron register, pinned cylinder axle and two sliding side registers Two rows of ten tin pipes and skin bellows Marked on the cylinder "N°1" and "Gavot & Fils Facteur d'Orgue ... Mirecourt Lorraine ...." France, circa 1830 H. 30 cm - Base: 36 x 22 cm (slight damage to veneer, one cylinder missing) Serinette or "perroquette" organs were used to train parrots, An example by the same builder is in the Musée de Gets and in the Musée de la Philharmonie de Paris (inv V.Mi.406). The Musée de Mirecourt has several serinettes and perroquettes in its collections.
