American flag with 48 stars and 13 stripes - Lot 164
American flag with 48 stars and 13 stripes The 25th flag of the United States of America was created on July 4, 1912, when Arizona and New Mexico were added to the Union. The 48-star design lasted 47 years, making it the longest-lasting flag after the current one. Made of fine cotton with corner reinforcements. Two loops allow it to be used on a flagpole. The stars are hand-embroidered, as are the reinforcements. United States, circa 1920-1945. Dim. 303 x 183 cm (Overall condition shows wear holes and edge tears). As states were added to the Union, the flag evolved from 1777 to 1960, with 27 versions (lasting from 1 to 64 years). Our example was replaced by the 49-star version when Alaska was added in 1959, and again in 1960 when the last state (50), Hawaii, was added.
