Set of 22 medals commemorating manned space missions (Mercur - Lot 144
Set of 22 medals commemorating manned space missions (Mercury 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9, Gemini 3 to 12, Apollo 7 to 12). These bronze medals were issued by the SHELL company in 1969 for one set. Medals presented and sealed on descriptive plates, with shipping box stamped TEZIO SPACE ART D. (box) 8 x 12.5 x 8.5 cm Man In Space was a promotional game published by the Shell Oil Company in 1969. It was a collect-and-win game with instant winners. With each visit to a participating Shell station, customers received a free aluminum game "coin" commemorating a U.S. manned space mission. The coins could be mounted on a game card (also free). If all the coins in a section of the game card could be collected, the player won the prize for that section. Prizes included cash sums of $1, $5, $50, $500 and $5,000. The game "coins" (more precisely, "medallions") were made of aluminum, 26 mm in diameter with a fluted edge. In addition to the cash, players could win a magnificent set of commemorative space medals struck in bronze. The set was delivered in a large envelope that included the medals, a mounting box for the medals and an informative booklet on the space missions depicted on the medals. On the reverse of each medal was a brief description of the space mission. In addition to the mission name and logo, the presentation on the plate and in the box features a photo of the crew member(s), an emblematic photo of the mission, a scale silhouette of each launcher used and the year of the flight. Three different backgrounds are applied to distinguish the three space programs - Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. Only the last plate is hollowed out at the back, revealing the inscriptions on the back of the medal.
