FRENCH ECOLE, 19th century Portrait of Abbé Dominique Dupuy (1812-1895), malacologie Framed oil on canvas 34.5 x 27.5 cm (restorations) Note: Abbé Dominique DUPUY was sent to the seminary to become chaplain to the Society of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, before becoming professor of natural history at the Auch seminary in 1837. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1873. Renowned as a botanist, he was one of the first to study the flora of the Gers, identifying over 1070 taxa. He created the Agde herbarium, and developed the Caousou herbarium (one of the most important in Languedoc-Roussillon). At the same time, he specialized in the study of molluscs (Malacology), of which he was one of the pioneers. He examined over 2,000 specimens, studying the shells and external parts of the animals. He published two major works on malacology. His collection is now housed at the Toulouse Natural History Museum.
