18th century FRENCH school, workshop of Charles-Antoine COYPEL The candle game Canvas 65 x 58 cm From an oval painting by Charles-Antoine Coypel in a private collection (see Th. Lefrançois, Charles Coypel, Peintre du roi, 1694-1752, Paris, 1994, p.208, n°73, reproduced). The subject of our work has rarely been treated in French painting. It illustrates the difficulties encountered by people with deformed faces in blowing out a candle. Coypel certainly knew this subject from a Flemish or Dutch master. In fact, our painting bears witness to a search for light, as well as a desire to caricature physiognomies, which Charles Coypel succeeds in doing with humor.
