GOETHE (Johann Wolfgang von). The Sorrows of Young Werther. New translation. Paris: imprimerie de P. Didot l'aîné, 1809. - In-8, marbled calf, gilt roulette framing the boards, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (period binding). Second edition of the French translation by Henri Huchet, comte de La Bédoyère (1782-1861), of Goethe's first novel, which was a huge success when it was published in 1774. The first French version was published in 1776, in a translation by Baron Karl Siegmund de Seckendorf. Other French translations followed, one of the most esteemed being that of La Bédoyère, first published in 1804. The edition is illustrated with three copper-engraved plates after Moreau le jeune. A copy in contemporary binding, with a portrait of young Werther engraved after a painting by Boilly. In truth, it is said to be the portrait of the painter's son. White marks on binding, small split at hinges. Corners dulled and missing. Scattered foxing.
