CALLOT (Jacques). Les Images de tous les... - Lot 12 - Euvrard & Fabre
CALLOT (Jacques). Les Images de tous les saincts et saintes de l'année, suivant le Martyrologe romain. Paris, Israël Henriet, 1636 [after 1642]. Small folio, fawn calf, red marbled title on spine decorated with gilt, gilt garland frame on covers, gilt tr. Complete suite of 124 plates drawn and engraved on copper by Jacques Callot (1592-1635), including an engraved title, a frontispiece and 122 plates with four subjects each, i.e. 488 prints relating to the saints of the liturgical year (nos. 1-476) then to the movable feasts (nos. 477-488). The title is in second state, the frontispiece in 3rd state; plates 18 to 119 feature etchings in second state, the others are from a later print run. This is one of the last works by Callot, who died a year before its first publication in a collection. Engraved in Lorraine at various times, the copperplates were sold by his heirs to Israël Henriet, who published a first Paris edition in 1636, dedicated to Cardinal de Richelieu (whose coat of arms on the title was engraved by Abraham Bosse, after Lieure). Without the dedication leaf to Cardinal de Richelieu. Upper spine damaged, corners dulled and spidering to spines. Small light stains on second cover.
