Eugène GRANDIN (1833-1919) The schooner Meteor IV Watercolor titled and signed lower right "METEOR IV EUGENE GRANDIN". Circa 1910 53 x 37 cm Notes - Eugène Jacques Philippe Grandin (1833-1919) was a ship portraitist in Le Havre and Monaco, earning him the title of patented marine painter to the Hereditary Prince of Monaco. - The Meteor IV was designed by Max Oertz and built by Friedrich Krupp's Germaniawerft in 1909 for Kaiser Wilhelm II. With a length of 47.4 meters and 1372 square meters of sail area, this schooner was the fourth in a series of five racing ships created for the German Emperor. In 1925, the ship was bought by Virgine Hériot and renamed Ailée I until 1928, when it was sold to the Ecole Navale de Brest, which was unable to use it. The ship was subsequently sunk by the Germans in 1940.
