Charles TOCHÉ (1851-1916) Preparatory drawing for the first issue of "Le Journal, Quotidien, Littéraire, Artistique et Politique" published on September 28th 1892 Gouache, watercolor, ink and pencil on paper signed lower right 27 x 22,5 cm Note : The first issue of the Journal appeared on September 28, 1892, launched by a large advertising campaign. This daily newspaper will be published between 1892 and 1944. Its founder Fernand XAU wished to create a "literary newspaper of a penny" (5 cents) accessible to all. His generous contracts allowed him to collaborate with the greatest intellectuals of his time such as Emile Zola, Léon Daudet, Jules Renard and Clemenceau. He also surrounded himself with artists of his time such as Charles TOCHÉ, a French painter, illustrator, lithographer and poster artist born in Nantes. He was interested in popular subjects such as leisure, travel, gastronomy and literature. His career was mainly in the modern Parisian milieu.
