Juan GRIS (1887-1927) The Girl and the Boxer, circa 1905-1909 Blue pencil, brush, Indian ink and white gouache on paper. Inscriptions of color indications. Stamps erased by white gouache. Note: Upon his arrival in Paris in 1906, Juan Gris moved to the Bateau-Lavoir and befriended Picasso, Braque and Leger. To support himself, he provided drawings to the satirical and humorous press such as Charivari, l'Assiette au beurre... This drawing could represent the American boxer Jack Johnson, the first black boxer to face a white boxer in the ring in 1908 and who became famous as the world heavyweight champion.
