Barlow wheel. Composed of an oak base, a... - Lot 151 - Euvrard & Fabre
Barlow wheel. Composed of an oak base, a copper wheel and a magnet. The moving wheel is placed on the surface of a mercury bath (initially placed in a small trough), itself placed between the branches of a U-shaped or horseshoe-shaped magnet. When the terminals are connected to a battery, the wheel turns and its direction changes when the batteries are reversed. Also, the speed of the wheel varies with the amount of current. This experiment demonstrates Laplace's forces. This experiment is no longer taught because of mercury vapors. About 1950 Height 22 - Width 21 - Depth 15 cm (mercury missing)
