René Georges HERMANN-PAUL (1864-1940) - Lot 82
René Georges HERMANN-PAUL (1864-1940)
AT THE 1900 EXHIBITION
Ink and watercolor signed lower right, titled and captioned:
- How pretty everything would be... if Mercier was only a dictator!
24 x 30 cm
Note: It is likely that Hermann Paul is referring in this drawing to Eugène Mercier, of Mercier Champagnes, who had taken advantage of the Exhibition and the tethered balloon built for the occasion by Edouard Surcouf and Eugène Godard to launch one of the first large-scale advertising campaigns by having the brand name "Champagne Mercier" painted in 3-metre-high letters on the envelope of the device.
