Rare HIPPOPOTAME Siliceous earthenware with... - Lot 60 - Eve
Rare HIPPOPOTAME Siliceous earthenware with turquoise glaze. Decoration painted black, representing the nilotic fauna and flora (bird, lotus flowers...) on the animal's body. Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty (1963-1786 BC) Very small shards on the glaze, if not intact. Length: 12,9 cm - Height: 7.5 cm Earthenware hippos, typical of the late Middle Kingdom, are rare, in fact only about fifty copies, all from the tombs of high dignitaries, and whose dimensions vary from 9 to 23 cm, are recorded throughout the world. As most of these hippos are in the collections of major museums, it is particularly rare to see a copy from a private collection offered for sale. Provenance: Paul Tinchant Collection (1893 - 1981), Brussels, before 1970. Collector and coin dealer Paul Tinchant donated many coins to the British Museum Harmakhis Gallery, 1997. Private collection, Belgium. Publication: Reproduced in the catalogue celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Harmakhis gallery, published on the occasion of the TEFAF, Maastricht, 2013 EVE
