Ball of S'Gravesande. Composed of an oak... - Lot 146 - Euvrard & Fabre
Ball of S'Gravesande. Composed of an oak base, a horizontal iron ring and a ball fixed to a rod by a chain. At room temperature, the sphere or ball passes through the ring. When the sphere is heated with a lamp or candle placed underneath, it is noticed that it no longer passes through the ring because of the expansion of the metal. When the sphere cools down, the ball can pass through, showing the reversibility of the expansion. Thus this experiment can show the reversible linear expansion of metals and alloys. About 1950 Diam. 11 - Width 15 - Length 30 cm (To be refixed)
