Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo - Lot 206
Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo Wooden staff H. 80 cm - W. 18 cm (on a base). Kibango ceremonial staffs were the primary symbols of authority for Luba dignitaries. Belonging to diviners, nobles, and territorial chiefs, they served as repositories of the histories, genealogies, and migrations of a specific family, lineage, or chiefdom. Since the Luba considered women to be best suited to preserve the secrets of power, they are the primary iconographic theme, as seen here.
